3  The computer works on the net by accessing other computers at addresses with an application called a browser.  “Surfing the web” is spending time searching for web pages using an address like Goggle or “Ask.com”.  Email (electronic mail) and Attachments (items “stuffed” in the message) are ways to talk and send data to others.  Chat and instant messaging is a way to talk to others with an application like AIM or YAHOO. It’s call “IMing” someone.  Viruses and hacking are when people do bad things to others for unkind fun or money. Example: hacking a password.  Plagiarism is copying someone’s work the calling it your own…it’s illegal.  Passwords should be strong and hard to break vs weak and easy to break.

4 Tell an adult about anything you see or find on the internet that makes you feel uncomfortable or confused.

5  Bad people called predators can watch and read your information  Don’t give predators any reason to contact you.

6 Do not answer messages that make you feel uncomfortable or are threatening. Tell your parents or trusted adult about anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. Do not send threatening or mean messages to others.

7 Who? You don’t know! Attachments – infect the computer. Chat/Instant Messages – Different screen name just for chatting avoids problem. Your Newest E-Mail Friend?

8 NEVER meet someone, from the internet by yourself.

9  Powerful passwords protect private possessions.  Can you say that five times fast?  It’s a tongue twister, but it’s true.

10 Don’t share Information about your family, relatives or friends. Don’t share your name, address, phone numbers, or the location of your house to anyone on the internet.

11  Passwords stop other people from seeing your private information or pretending to be you.

12  They are the keys to unlocking your special stuff on computers and online.  For example, your password allows you to save your points after playing an online game.

13  When you’re older, you’ll use passwords to keep track of your money. You’ll also use them to shop online. Knowing how to create powerful passwords will help keep your money safe.

14  Creating a powerful password is like putting together a puzzle.  The best ones are made of small pieces put together in a way that only you can remember.

15  Good passwords are hard for your friends to guess.  They are also hard for a criminal to figure out.

16  Experts have come up with tips for making strong passwords.  The more tips you follow, the harder your password will be to guess.

17  What do YOU think makes a powerful password?  Write it on your paper.

19  It’s okay to write down passwords. But don’t carry them with you or tape them on your computer. With your parent or guardian, find a safe place at home to keep them.
