2 Gather The Lord be with you And also with you

3 Receive Peter saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; he was the one who had reclined next to Jesus at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?" When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about him?" Jesus said to him, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!" So the rumour spread in the community that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?" This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things that Jesus did; if every one of them were written down, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. John 21:20-25

4 Caring for others – reflecting on our reading · John was the only apostle who did not desert Jesus while he was dying and stood at the foot of the cross. The dying Jesus asked John to care for his mother, Mary…. · Show a film clip indicating caring—this is a bit of a random one but should begin a discussion—caring for baby Stuart the mouse! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMYqJm9IEXAhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMYqJm9IEXA · Reflect on how Stuart relied on the care of others—how do babies rely on care? Older people? Ourselves? Consider who cares for us—who cares for our safety, our basic needs, our education, our enjoyment of life, our companionship etc.? · How do you care for others? Discuss with a partner the different ways you care for others in your family, among your friends, in your school / church community / wider community? · What caring action could you do today—encourage students to commit to something 4 th Gospel - Find out more about the 4th gospel writer (John’s) angle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfyr98NgRrQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfyr98NgRrQ Nicknames - Jesus gives nicknames to a few of his disciples - John and James are nicknames Sons of thunder possibly because of their enthusiasm … or perhaps it was ironic? · What nickname do you have—if any? (keep these positive) · Write a nickname you have been given that you are happy to share with the group on a piece of paper—keep it hidden from your classmates · Collect the nicknames in then read them out—can you guess who belongs to the name… · How are nicknames good for us? How can nicknames be unkind? Engage

5 Respond Merciful Lord, cast your bright beams of light upon the Church: that, being enlightened by the teaching of your blessèd apostle and evangelist Saint John, we may so walk in the light of your truth that we may at last attain to the light of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ your incarnate Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.Amen Collect for St John the Apostle and Evangelist
