Glycolysis Beginning process of breaking down glucose; releases only a small amount of energy (ATP); happens in the cytoplasm

one molecule of glucose is split in two molecules of pyruvic acid A net gain of 2 ATP & 2 NADH are produced Happens very fast & doesn’t require oxygen (anaerobic)

Fermentation anaerobic way to process food to get energy 2 kinds –Alcoholic –Lactic Acid

Alcoholic Fermentation Pyruvic acid + NADH alcohol + CO2 + NAD+ Used by yeasts & other microorganisms

Lactic Acid Fermentation Pyruvic acid + NADH lactic acid + NAD+ This process regenerates NAD+ so that glycolysis can cont. Can be done without oxygen

Lactic Acid Cont. (DON’T COPY) Muscle cells can build up lactic acid when they are forced to work without enough of an oxygen supply –muscle cells need energy for movement whether oxygen is available or not –without oxygen, cells switch from cellular respiration to lactic acid fermentation to get ATP –build up of lactic acid creates burning sensation in muscles –You are out of breath after a sprint because your body is trying to get oxygen back to the muscles
