Objective: plot points in a coordinate plane
4.1 The Coordinate Plane Objective: plot points in a coordinate plane
2
The Cartesian Coordinate Plane
A coordinate plane is formed by two real number lines that intersect at a right angle at the origin. The origin is the ordered pair (0,0). x-axis: horizontal axis y-axis: vertical axis Ordered pair: a pair of coordinates, written in the form (x, y), used to locate any point on a coordinate plane. The x coordinate tells which way to move horizontally on the graph, and the y coordinate tells which way to move vertically.
3
A coordinate plane is divided into 4 quadrants.
Quadrant I is the upper right quadrant. The rest of the quadrants are numbered counterclockwise.
4
Example 1: Write the ordered pairs that correspond to points A, B, C, and D. A: B: C: D:

Example 2: Plot each point in the coordinate plane
Example 2: Plot each point in the coordinate plane. Then, state the quadrant the point is in. Quadrant A (-4, 3) B (2, -1) C (0, 3) D (5, 0) E (-2, -3) F (3, 3)

Now its time to practice. Open the internet browser on your iPad.
In google, search “graphing pictures.” The link should be the first one: Pick something you would like to graph and give it a shot.
