Great Britain controlled Canada Russia claimed Alaska and down the west coast of N. America Spain claimed the Southwest (became Mexico’s territory after the revolution in 1821) United States purchased “Louisiana Territory” from France Competition in the West

1803 U.S. purchased large amount of land from France for the sum of $15 million Doubled the size of the United States and brought Americans “out West” The Louisiana Purchase

North Western part of North America Controlled jointly by the United States & Great Britain Both tried to get the most amount of settlers in that area so they would have the best claim to the land The Oregon Country

Lewis & Clark Before Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase he sent Meriwether Lewis & William Clark to explore the land Expedition lasted from 1804-1806 They reported the plant & animal life in the region as well as information about natives & chances of settlement Since they told tale of streams full of beaver, trappers headed west to take part in the fur trade
