3 Situation/Problem You are the owner of a civil engineering firm called The Bridge Civil Engineering Corp. Your company has been contracted to build a bridge in a town called Bridgeville with a span of 20m across a river. The bridge’s road surface must have multiple lanes to handle heavy traffic. It must also be able to carry heavy loads since tractor trailers will be using it to move raw materials and finished goods to and fro from the Bridgeville industrial district. The bridge must also withstand all weather conditions. 4 Ideas / Research SITUATION FOR DESIGN We at Bridge corp intend on contructing a perfect flawless bridge, most bridges have some kind of flaw. We think by designing this bridge we have created the first flawless bridge ever. INVESTIGATION How big will it be? What materials are needed? Will it meet the expectations? 6 Solution How big will it be? Since the bridge is supposed to span only 20m. Our group decided that a Howe truss bridge should be sufficient enough for the problem. What materials are needed? The bridge will be 31.5cm in length, 10cm in width and 10cm in width. Will it meet the expectations? The bridge will be used to allow cars, trucks and people to Bridgeville's industrial district. What kind of bridge will be made? We need wood, wax paper, a glue gun to attach everything together and a sander. NEXT HOME BACK

9 Realization Since we chose a modified Howe truss bridge, we decided that we couldn’t just start without making a step-by-step plan of how we were going to build the bridge. Materials ¼ inch by ¼ inch wood Glue gun Wax paper Pencil Sander HOME NEXT BACK

10 Procedure 1.First, a sheet of wax paper was placed top of the bridge sketch. The sketch’s corners were taped to the wax paper. 2.Sticks of wood were placed onto the sketch making sure they were lined up to the lines on the sketch. 3.Using a pencil, the sticks were marked with the length needed in order for them to line up with the sketch. 4.The sticks were cut to their needed lengths or sanded for minor adjustments in length using the sander. 5.The trimmed sticks were placed back onto the wax paper covering the sketch and arranged so they all line up with the sketch. 11 Realization The sticks were glued together using the glue gun and a one side of the bridge was made. The bridge was pulled off the wax paper and put to one side. 6. Steps 2-6 were repeated for the second side of the bridge. 8.Ten 10cm long sticks were cut out. 9. The two sides of the bridge were joined together by placing the 10cm long sticks evenly spaced in between the two sides of the bridge. NEXT BACK

12 Realization 10.More sticks were measured and cut out so they can separate the squares formed by the 10cm long sticks into triangles. These sticks were then glued as shown by the diagram. HOME NEXT BACK

13 Evaluation Since we haven’t yet had the time to test our bridge on the Structure Stress Analyzer, we don’t have any testing data. BEGINING RETURN
