Binder Organization Binder checks on each review day for each of our unit test You should have tabs labeled with the following (1) Learning Targets, (2) Notes, (3) In Class Work, (4) Homework, (5) Labs, Lab Repots, and Projects, and (6) Exit Slips, Quizzes, Tests Everything you are given will now have a page number and this will help you keep your binder in the proper order.
4
Taste and Texture Test In the well plates at your table there are 8 different substances. Play with each of the substances and categorize them based on what you see Be ready to defend your groups reasons.
5
Today’s Learning Targets 6.1 – I can describe the common properties of acids, bases, and salts. I can distinguish them based on taste, texture, ability to conduct electricity, and other observable properties.
6
Today’s Focus Question What are the properties of the chemicals that we will be using to dispose of our dead body?
7
Today’s Agenda 1. Catalyst 2. Taste Test 3. Acid/Base Properties Lecture 4. Categorize That Compound! 5. Acid/Base Classification Systems 6. Acid/Base Simulator 7. Work Time 8. Exit Slip
8
Acids and Bases We can categorize a number of compounds as either acids or bases. Acids react with bases to produce a salt in a neutralization reaction
9
Conducting Electricity We say things can conduct electricity or not conduct electricity. REMEMBER – Metals are good conductors When you dissolve an ionic compound in a solution it breaks apart into its ions. This positive and negative charge allows for the solution to now conduct electricity. HCl H + + Cl - Allow for it to conduct electricity!
10
Conducting Electricity You need charges to conduct electricity. Therefore, in order to conduct electricity you need ions. IONIC compounds conduct electricity and COVALENT compounds do not!
12
Common Properties of Acids Aqueous solution Sour Conduct an electrical current React with a base to form a salt Most contain hydrogen in its chemical structure (NOT REQUIRED)
13
Common Properties of Bases Aqueous solution Taste bitter Think about how it tastes when soap gets in your mouth Dilute bases feel slippery React with an acid to produce a salt Bases conduct an electrical current Most contain OH - (NOT REQUIRED)
14
Common Properties of Salts Ionic compound (contains an anion and cation) Forms when an acid and base react in a neutralization reaction. Characteristic salty taste Conduct electricity
15
Summarize
16
Categorize that Compound! With your table you are going to create a mini-poster Use this poster to help create a visual representation of acids, bases, and salts. Make sure to incorporate properties such as taste, texture, ability to conduct electricity, and other observable properties. USE PICTURES!
