What Does Credible Mean? Oxford English Dictionary: Worthy of belief or confidence; trustworthy, reliable. A credible web source is one that is current, accurate, trustworthy and reliable.

Methods to Determine Credibility Look for the author or organization that published the website Why did they produce the website? Is there a bias? Who is providing the information? Is the author credible/knowledgeable? Analyze the language of the website Are there grammatical or spelling errors? What type of language do they use? Is it academic, or technical? Is the information biased in any way? Check the date of publication for the website How recent is the information provided? Has the website been updated?

Methods to Determine Credibility Look for references Do they list a references page? Do they cite their sources of information? Look at of the URL The URL is the address of website Endings such as.gov,.org or.edu stand for government, organizations and educational institutions..com stands for commercial..us,.uk,.es denote the country that relates to the web space. NOTE: Not all.edu and.org websites will be credible and it is important that you use these tools to be critical of the information

Examples of Credible Sources Government documents or websites National Organizations News Sources or Media- These sources may be biased and it is important to note these bias and compensate by researching both sides of an issue Journals News papers News shows Note: News shows like The Colbert Report are satirical, meaning they are mocking the news. Due to the mocking nature of these programs there is a bias in the information that is presented.

A Note About Wikipedia Wikipedia can be a good place to start It can be very inaccurate in some cases, because anyone can change the information on the site It is a Wiki Remember that Wiki’s are places that can be edited by multiple people and other websites maybe have wiki in their URL. You can use the references at the bottom of pages to find credible sources in many cases
