Our Goals Today Explain how being “underinsured” leads to negative financial and health consequences Analyze the connection between income and health What do you think “underinsured” means? 3m The authors counted people as underinsured if their out-of-pocket medical expenses equaled at least 10% of their family income, or 5% if they were already low-income, or their deductible equaled at least 5% of their income.

What does it mean to be “underinsured?” Definitions vary, but generally: Underinsured: people who DO have insurance plans but whose medical expenses (excluding premiums) amount to 10% or more of their post-tax income OR 5% or more of their income if they are below the poverty line 2m
