7 We need to remember… …all of these, and more. BUT In a way that encourages greater understanding, removes stereotypes, and reduces conflict

8 The History Project hopes to…  Foster peace, democracy, human rights, reconciliation in SEE  Create a positive attitude towards a common regional history  Create common space for dialogue  Provide tools and ideas rather than reinterpreting history  Focus on local and personal histories

9 The History Project hopes to… (cont.)  Increase tolerance through diminishing the role of stereotypes  Share good practices and knowledge  Create regional joint endeavors between governments, NGOs, institutions  Promote lifelong learning and adult education

10 Focus of the History Project  Transnational and comparative approach through participation from 8 countries  Examine topics that have been excluded from the traditional curriculum  History education in SEE identified as a key issue for reconciliation, democratization, and stability

11 Activities 1  Seminars: Places of Memories and Meetings for Dialogue, Mostar  Teacher Trainings 2004: Bosnia and Herzegovina; Serbia and Montenegro; Bulgaria  Teacher Trainings 2005: Albania; Bulgaria; Romania; Sloevania

12 Activities 2  Conferences:  2004 History Views and Human Rights, Bosnia and Herzegovina;  2005 History Education and Regional Policy Harmonization, Kosovo  Travelling Exhibition (September 2004 – December 2004)

13 Goals of Teacher Trainings  Brings together and networks educators from across the region  Share different approaches to history teaching  Share best practices and methodologies  Multipliers Approach: Participants disseminate ideas and methods to colleagues

14 Goals of the Conference in Kosovo  further corporation between individuals involved in promotion of history in the context of adult education  to give floor to the experts coming to share present situation of history education and discuss challenges for the near future  provide an opportunity for participants to raise questions and confront issues in small workshops
