Before we begin today, some questions for you… What does the word “percent” literally mean? What is a very common unit of measure that uses 100 as its scale? If I wanted to know how much 75% of $1.00 was, what could I think? What about 75% of $2.00? “per” – out of “cent” – 100 MONEY! There are 100 pennies in a dollar 75 “out of 100” pennies is 75¢ 75¢ + 75¢ = $1.50

Charlotte 7.25% Washington 6.5% Michigan 6% Colorado 2.9% Why do you think there are so many differences? Who decides what percent we pay?
10
CD $7.50 Tax $7.50 (.06) = $0.45 Total $7.95 Hint: Change the percent to a decimal! Another way: You would pay $0.06 on every dollar you spend, so multiply 6 cents by 7.5 dollars to get 45 cents. Then, add them together!
11
Tax: 2 (.06) =.12Total: 2.00 +.12 = $2.12 Tax: 5 (.06) =.3Total: 2.00 +.30 = $5.30 Tax:.5 (.06) =.03Total:.50 +.03 = $.53
12
Tax: 2 (.07) =.14Total: 2.00 +.14 = $2.14 Tax: 5 (.07) =.35Total: 2.00 +.35 = $5.35 Tax:.5 (.07) =.035 Total:.50 +.035 = $.53 or $.54
13
Since Alexis had to pay $0.06 for each dollar, find how many “.06” are in 4.80 by dividing! 4.80/.06 = $80 as the original cost!
14
$0.75 /.05 = $15 was to price of the game We know he paid $.05 for every dollar he spent, so again, you divide the tax amount by $.05 to get $15!
