Common Core High School Mathematics: Transforming Instructional Practice for a New Era 2.1
2
Agenda Homework review and discussion What is a function? Reading MP4 and MP6 Graphing a story Break Temperature conversions Reading 8.F.1-5 Homework and closing remarks 2.2
3
2.3 Homework Review and Discussion Activity 1: Table Discussion: Discuss your write up for the day 1 math task Bernardo and Sylvia Play a Game: Compare your strategies with others at your table. Reflect on how you might revise your own solution and/or presentation.
4
Learning Intentions & Success Criteria Learning Intentions: We are learning to deepen our understanding of the Common Core State Standards and the implications for teaching and learning mathematics. Success Criteria: We will be successful when we can describe how the content standards and math practice standards are evident in the implementation of a mathematical task. 2.4

2.5 What is a Function? Individually, write a definition of “function” on a piece of paper. As a table group, compare and discuss your definitions. How does your concept of “function” differ from that of: expression equation Activity 2:
6
2.6 What is a Function? “A function f from a set A to a set B is a rule which associates with each element of the set A one and only one element of the set B.” Activity 2: How does this “official” definition compare to the definitions at your table? (Notation: we write f : A B)
7
2.7 What is a Function? With your shoulder partner, discuss the examples on the “Function or not?” handout. Compare your answers with others at your table. Activity 2:

1.8 Graphing a Story Sketch a graph that reflects all the information given in this story: Activity 3: “It was a dark and stormy night. Before the torrents of rain came, the bucket was empty. The rain subsided at daybreak. The bucket remained untouched through the morning until Old Dog Trey arrived as thirsty as a dog. The sun shone brightly through the afternoon. Then Billy, the kid next door, arrived. He noticed two plugs in the side of the bucket. One of them was about a quarter of the way up, and the second one was near the bottom. As fast as you could blink an eye, he pulled out the plugs and ran away.”

2.9 Reading MP4 and MP6 Read the Standard for Mathematical Practice. MP4. Model with mathematics. Turn and talk: how did you see this practice standard in the activities you have just completed? Activity 4:

2.10 Reading MP4 and MP6 Read the Standard for Mathematical Practice. MP6. Attend to precision. Turn and talk: how did you see this practice standard in the activities you have just completed? Activity 4:

2.12 Temperature Conversions The graph of Fahrenheit temperature, O F, as a function of Centigrade temperature, O C, is a straight line. Water boils at a temperature of 212 O F, which corresponds to 100 O C, and freezes at 32 O F, which corresponds to 0 O C. Without graphing or using a formula (no calculator): What Fahrenheit temperature corresponds to 50 O C? What Centigrade temperature corresponds to 92 O F? Activity 5:
13
2.13 Temperature Conversions Sketch a graph of Fahrenheit temperature as a function of Centigrade temperature. What is the rate of change of Fahrenheit temperature with respect to Centigrade temperature? Write an equation that can be used to calculate the Fahrenheit temperature for any given Centigrade temperature. Are the Fahrenheit and Centigrade temperatures ever equal? Activity 5:
14
2.14 Temperature Conversions Activity 5: How did you see MP4 and MP6 in this activity? MP4. Model with mathematics. MP6. Attend to precision.
15
2.15 Reading 8.F.1-5 Read these content standards from the Grade 8 Functions domain. Turn and talk: how did you see these content standards in the activities you have completed today? Activity 6:
