Square Deal -”hit the line hard” -Presidency as the “bully pulpit”: used the news influence legislation he serves as the protector of the people -Square Deal was his program to fix the evils of society: conservation of natural resources, control of corporations, and consumer protection -”politics is the art of the possible” -”speak softly and carry a big stick”

Gov’t Involvement -1902 coal strike: workers want 20% raise, 9 hour workday, & to unionize mine owners refused to bargain -strike threaten fuel needs of the nation— Roosevelt intervenes -Roosevelt had both groups to meet and go to arbitration -set an example of Presidents mediating conflicts

Trustbusting -trusts controlled 4/5 of industry -Roosevelt believed in good and bad trusts. Wanted to attack “bad” trusts -several trusts were broken and real gov’t regulation began -RR regulation: needed federal regulation Northern Securities v. US: Ended a major railroad monopoly Precedent case for trust busting Roosevelt earns nickname: “Trustbuster”

The Jungle -written by Upton Sinclair -muckraking novel -meant to expose the conditions of immigrants instead told horrible conditions of meat packing industry -impact of novel was the description of meatpacking industry = leads public to call for reform, Sinclair is invited to White House

Gov’t Action Roosevelt -investigated Sinclair’s claims: reports states accounts in Sinclair’s novel are TRUE -passed Meat Inspection Act, 1906: cleanliness requirements and federal meat inspection -later passage of Pure Food and Drug Act: all food and drug products must be labeled accurately -FDA: set-up later under Wilson

Conservation - industry was consuming large portions of natural resources -pollution was destroying waterways -shrinking wilderness and natural resources -established several national parks (Sierra, Yosemite, Cherokee, Tahoe, Rio Grande, Hoosier) -set aside large portions of forestlands -Gifford Pinchot: conservationist, appointed head of US Forest Service -development of land for the common good First conservation president

Civil Rights -Progressive era as a whole ignored the needs of minorities Roosevelt recognized individuals: -Booker T. Washington : first African American to be invited to White House, believed in equality gradually through education, Tuskegee Institute -W.E.B. DuBois : demanded equality now, led Niagara Falls Convention NAACP: equality for all races
