Manifest Destiny was the 19 th century belief that America should reach across all of the land separating the Pacific and Atlantic ocean.

Louisiana was purchased from France for 15 Million dollars. Its was 828,000 square miles. It gave America access to the Mississippi river

American settlers had come to Texas and built plantations and farms. The settlers, led by Stephan Austin, asked Mexico for admission into the Mexican nation as an independent state. Texas declared itself independent in 1836 and its first President was Sam Houston. In 1845 Texas was annexed by the United States and became the 28th state.

Russia, France, Great Britain, and the United States all had claims in that territory. Russia and France gave up on their claims. England negotiated a treaty with the United States to make a boundary at the 49 th north latitude

America and Mexico have been having conflicts with each other because of the annexation of Texas. The US troops went to the Rio Grande river, a disputed boarder. Mexico attack the US troops and President Polk responded by declaring war on Mexico because they had a unprovoked attack on us The US military destroyed the Mexico’s military. The treaty at the ended of the war lead to gaining the Mexican Cession and had to pay Mexico 15 million dollars.

The Us noticed that the territory was very important for railroad building so the United States paid Mexico 10 million dollars.
