ATAMSBLAST DIGITAL AGENDA 10 – 11 College Prep Chemistry B KAUFFMAN5 Mar – 9 Mar 2012 DO NOW: M: Register for the chemistry class on Edmodo: log in to your account, then on the LHS near Groups, click Join. The code for the course is: t4p8rl. Download the files necessary for your assignments for this week. Also, download the audio recording software so that you can do your personal science dictionaries per the new instructions in collaborative. What are the values of the latent heat of fusion and latent heat of vaporization for water? What is the meaning of the latent heat? What is fusion? What is vaporization? W: Log in to Achieve3000 through your common login. Click on your e-mail on the left hand side of the screen and read the e-mail from Empower titled “Meet 7 Billion.” Respond to the e-mail and answer the question posed. Then click on the link and read the thought question for the article. Then, read the assigned article. After reading the article, answer the multiple choice questions. Refer back to the article as you work on answering the questions. Finish the thought question, math question and poll question during the individual station. Submit each online for credit. Th: What is a rate? How is a reaction rate defined? From this definition, what data would you need to calculate the reaction rate? California Standards: Std 7: Chemical Thermodynamics 7b. Endo/exothermic 7d. Problem Solving 7a. Temperature & Heat Flow 7c. Latent Heats IE: Expt & Investigation Std 8: Chemical Reaction Rates 8a. Rxn rate 8b: factors affecting rate 8c: effect and role of catalysts Essential Questions: How do we find the energy required/released during phase changes, during chemical reactions, and during simple heating and cooling. What is a reaction rate? What variables affect reaction rate? What is a catalyst and how does it affect reaction rate? LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR STUDENTS: Given: Compass learning activities, information and practice packet, and direct instruction learner will: accurately describe thermodynamic concepts and solve problems related to the transfer of heat. Accurately describe reaction rates, the variables affecting reaction rates, and the role of catalysts in reactions. by: solving problems using the procedures outlined in class and showing their work, completing vocabulary in the new group format, reading, taking notes, summarizing videos, and completing exit slips as well as a unit assessment.

Individual Instruction: Go to connected.mcgraw-hill.com login userid: mhescistudent passwd: science2012 scroll down to the bottom of the textbook lists and click on the chemistry book link titled SEE MORE. Then click on Chapter 15 (if you have not already done so) or Chapter 16. On the Right Hand Side, click on the Online Test Practice (first link in each chapter). Make sure to e-mail your test results to kkauffman@laalliance.org and to your own laalliance e-mail. kkauffman@laalliance.org Compass Learning: Thermodynamics Compass Learning: Reaction Rates and Equilibrium Catch up on your compass learning quizzes. Complete this week’s Achieve3000 science article. Direct Instruction: Thermodynamics Heat of mixing Heat of reaction Endothermic/Exothermic Phase Changes Reaction Rates: Definitions Factors influencing rate of reaction Role of catalysts Collaborative Station: Construct your personal science dictionary for thermodynamics and reaction rates following the new posted procedure. Complete the Virtual Investigation: Phase Changes in Section 1 and the Animation: Calorimetry in Section 2 of chapter 16.
