What is COSMOS? “an intensive four-week summer residential program summer residential program for students who have demonstrated an aptitude for… STEM subjects” Locations: UC Davis, Irvine, Santa Cruz, San Diego Dates: (2015) July 5 - August 1 or June 28 - July 24 (Irvine) Programs: different for each location, taught by university/guest professors website: cosmos-ucop.ucdavis.edu

Types of Programs Math: combinatorics/number theory/logic, modeling Bio: biomedical, biotech, marine biology, tissue/tumor biology, genetics Comp sci: computer networking, video games, mobile digital media Physics: kinetic sculptures, astrophysics, engineering mechanics Chemistry: nanochemistry, everyday chem

How to apply? February 20, 2015 deadline Need two teacher recommendations Select 1 or 2 clusters (for one campus) Essays (200-300 words): Reasons for choosing cluster What excites you about math/science or describe a project/experience that furthered your interest

Experience Housing/food/rules: Dorms w/ communal bathroom, two people per room Lights out at 11 RA one each floor, three floors per building Can’t leave residential area alone Three meals provided in cafeteria Optional activities after class Courses: Varies depending on instructor Goal: complete project for presentation (last day) End in afternoon (~3-4) Work in small groups (few lectures) ~20 people per cluster Flexibility on project Some work outside class

Experience (cont’d) After class: Game room, sports, bookstore, restaurants, etc Guest lecturer once a week (required) Weekends: if you stay, must attend activity on Saturday Afternoon activities: games such as scavenger hunts some required (karaoke night, dorm Olympics, etc)
