Loyalty Mrs. Hall’s Ethics of Journalism Unit

What is loyalty? http://youtu.be/XQ8TuxoSZeo After watching the video, write down what you think about the word loyalty. What does that word mean to you?

Where are your loyalties? In journalism we are constantly being pulled in different directions based on competing loyalties. It is imperative to understand our own loyalties in order to make effective ethical decisions at times when conflicting loyalties occur. The next slides will ask you to decipher where and what your loyalties are within 4 different levels of interaction. As you read each page, write down your thoughts and reactions to the points made about that layer.

Arising from a shared humanity… Demonstrate respect for each person as an individual. Communicate honestly and truthfully with all persons. Build a fair and compassionate social and cultural environment that promotes the common good.

Arising from professional practice… Fulfill the informational and entertainment mission of the media. Understand your audience’s needs. Strive to enhance professional development of self and others. Avoid the abuse of power and position. Conduct professional activities in ways that uphold or surpass the ideals of virtue and competence.

Arising from employment… Keep agreements and promises, operate within the framework of the law and extend due process to all persons. Do not squander your organization’s resources or your public trust. Promote compassionate and humane professional relationships. Foster policies that build a community of ethnic, gender and socioeconomic diversity. Promote the right of all to be heard.

Arising from the media’s role in public life… Serve as examples of open institutions where truth is required. Foster open discussion and debate. Interpret your professional actions to readers and viewers. Serve as a voice for the voiceless. Serve as a mirror of society.

“Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach.” What are your loyalties? With this information you and a partner should write a response for the following ethical situation: In a meeting with you as a member of the student media, the administration has informed you that “your first loyalty should be to the school and making it look good.” Be sure to include what you would say in reply and why you would make those comments.
