Dog fun facts There are about 400 million dogs in the world There are hundreds of different breeds The most popular breed of dog is the Labrador Dogs have earned the nickname "man's best friend" Humans help train dogs to enter in competitions such as breed shows, agility and obedience contests, racing and sled pulling A dog lives for about 10 to 14 years

Dogs can see some colours like blue, yellow and grey. Dogs have 18 different muscles that move each ear.

How do dogs communicate? Besides barking, growling or whining, dogs also use different parts of their bodies The position of their ears and facial expression can tell you if they are scared, happy or sad Many people don’t realize a wagging tail does not always mean a dog is happy

Dogs have an amazing sense of smell, they are able to smell odours in concentrations nearly 100 million times lower than humans can.

Police Dogs All police dogs must be an experts at basic obedience training They must obey the commands of their handler without hesitation The dog must be able to jump over walls and climb stairs Each dog must get used to city life, because a dog that's nervous around people won't make a good police dog Each dog receives specialty training. Many dogs are trained to search for drugs, though some are bomb or gun sniffers. Police dogs can also track missing persons or suspects

Hunting Dogs These breeds love long walks/runs and playing fetch The water dogs among them can't get enough of swimming They have dense, water-repellent coats, to protect them in all types of brush and weather conditions They love people and are well suited to being family dogs if given the necessary amount of exercise

Wild dogs The African wild dog is the largest of its family in Africa The current population is 6,600 adults, only 1,400 of which are fully grown The African wild dog is a really social animal living in packs They hunt for antelopes and catch them by chasing them to exhaustion
