Symptoms of depression Depressed mood Change in appetite Thoughts of death Inactivity Agitation Difficulty concentrating Feelings of worthlessness or guilt Chronic fatigue Anxious Over sleeping Insomnia- not sleeping Weight loss Weight gain Loss of pleasure Restlessness Irritability Headaches or stomachaches that don’t respond to treatment

What strategies are there for coping with depression? Talk to parent, guardian, mentor, or other trusted adult Stay connected with friends Practice healthy behaviors- eating healthy, exercising Use anger management skills Practice stress management skills Avoid alcohol and other drugs Be resilient Seek treatment if depression last more than two weeks

What else can you do? Write in a journal Take medication on time Get plenty of sleep Don’t over do it

How can you be resilient? Work on relationships with family members Develop a close relationship with a mentor Choose friends who are supportive Deal with your feelings in difficult situations- don’t put them off Avoid harmful behaviors as a way to cope Ask for support Join a support group Be involved in school activities Practice healthful behaviors Volunteer
