Founder = Roger Williams – after he was forced to leave Massachusetts Bay colony Early Settlement = Providence -Roger Williams-founded first Baptist church in America-opposed forced attendance at church & English colonists taking Native American lands by force-founded Rhode Island-guaranteed religious freedom and separation of church and state.

7 Williams’ belief, was that all individuals and religious bodies were entitled to religious liberty as a natural right, and that civil governments did not have the authority to enforce religious laws.

9 Maryland Year = 1632 Reason Founded = Haven for Catholics but offered religious freedom Founder = George Calvert, Lord Baltimore Early Settlement = Baltimore Government = Religious Toleration Act (1639) offered religious freedom to all Christians in the colony To attract more settlers promised religious freedom to all Christians (Catholics and Protestants)

10 Pennsylvania Year = 1681 Reason Founded = Haven for Quakers but offered religious freedom Founder = William Penn Early Settlements = Philadelphia – largest city in the colonies -Founded as a refuge for Quakers-welcomed different religions and ethnic groups-allowed anyone who believed in God to settle there (included Jews) -Quakers believed that each person could know God directly through “an inner light”-neither ministers nor the Bible was needed-also believed in treating Native Americans fairly-were whipped, imprisoned, and hanged in Massachusetts

11 -Great Migration forcing congregations to set up new colonies-Mass settlers began to move north but still economically dependent on Mass- New Hampshire founded in 1638 when John Wheelwright established the town of Exeter NH separate colony in 1679-Maine separate state in 1820

13 Connecticut Year = 1636 Reason Founded = Puritans seeking more land during the Great Migration Founders = Thomas Hooker moved his Puritan congregation Early Settlement = Hartford Government = Fundamental Orders of Connecticut - 1st written constitution (plan of government) in North America Written to govern the colony -Fundamental Orders of Connecticut-were in effect a constitution-1st written constitution in North America-extended voting rights to non-church members and limited the power of the governor-expanded the idea of representative government

15 The Dutch colony, New Netherland, was a threat to England
-Threat because of trade expanding settlements and location New Netherland was originally Dutch colonies-city of New Amsterdam was the center of trade Problems: (1) lacked settlers (2) poor leadership (3) wars with local Natives Located between New England to the north and the Chesapeake region to the south In 1664 the Dutch settlers surrendered to England without a fight

16 New York Year = 1624 Reason Founded = Trade for the Dutch West Indies Company Founders = The Dutch Important Events = New Amsterdam surrendered to the English in August the Duke of York became the owner of the colony - renamed New York King gives land to his brother, the Duke of York-Capital (New Amsterdam) and colony renamed New York Early 20th century Dutch Revival buildings on Pearl Street in lower Manhattan recall the Dutch origins of the city. The original 17th century architecture of New Amsterdam has completely vanished (aided by the fires of 1776 and 1835), leaving only archaeological remnants.

Early Settlements = Fort Christina renamed Wilmington was part of Pennsylvania until it broke away after 1704 Originally settled in 1638 by Sweden-lost colony to Dutch-who lost to English-was part of Pennsylvania until it broke away after being granted their own assembly

18 New Jersey Year = 1664 Reason Founded = Awarded by the Duke of York to two English nobles Founders = George Cateret and Lord John Berkeley Government = offered religious and political freedoms Land given to two English nobles-named for the Isle of Jersey-promised large grants of land and a representative assembly

21 North & South Carolina Year = 1663
Reason Founded = Given as a reward for loyalty to King Charles II Founders = Proprietors Early Settlements = Charles Town later becomes Charleston - Split into two colonies in 1729. Founders received the land from King Charles II as a reward for their loyalty to him-named in his honor (Carolus is Latin for Charles) -cash crops were rice, indigo, and tobacco-settlers in north and south had many differences and the colony split in two in 1729

22 Georgia Year = 1732 Reason founded = Haven for debtors or poor people
Founder = James Oglethorpe Important events = English government wanted to use it as a military outpost against Spanish Florida. Founded as a refuge for debtors
