Teaching using Technology Why should we use it? Where do we start? What is Web 2.0? What are some of our concerns or challenges? How does technology help us achieve our curricular goals?

It makes sense to use tech! Students use some form of technology already We (as teachers) use technology already both personally and professionally In the future, technology will become more prevalent in all of our lives

Why we Should Use it Provide opportunities to communicate with native speakers and other learners of the language using Internet It’s a part of student’s daily lives, and should be incorporated into the classroom Teach students to use technological resources appropriately so they can be life-long learners

Where do we Start? We need to make the use of technology meaningful Keep end goal in mind Use web 2.0 technologies

1. Information Overload How can we stay informed about all the new technology and incorporate it into our classroom? Ask for help & share resources with colleagues Professional social networks Network with colleagues Learn from our colleagues (from around world too!) Learn from our students

2. Internet Safety How can we ensure the safety of students on the Internet? ~Greatest Risk to children is being denied access (to rich resources and opportunities) Have discussion about safety issues with parents, students, administrators, and colleagues Proactive (not defensive) in teaching Digital Citizenship Share expected behaviors with students Teach students how to search safely Information on the Internet is there to stay!

3. Appropriate Internet Conduct How do we help students conduct themselves appropriately online? Cyber bullying Cyber plagiarism Digital Citizenship Ethical, just, LEGAL & responsible behavior in online world

4. Digital Equity How can we give all students equal access to web resources and experiences? More than just “equal access and opportunity to digital tools, resources & services” It is “Fair distribution based on students’ needs” Unfortunately.. Where you live & How much you earn Determines access to information and ability to participate in online educational opportunities

Lessons for Teachers Using Technology Know your tool Don’t expect students to unquestioningly accept the use of technology Express clearly your student expectations and provide clear easy-to-follow instructions Give students enough time to become familiar with the technology Have students be patient and tolerant of technical difficulties or glitches State objective activities and make clear the role technology plays in achieving objectives

Take Away Make sure Technology is… Integrated in curriculum Student-centered Authentic It is engages students in new ways can not be done and take away same meaning without technology Pay off Language gains greater than time invested in technology Meaning happens in target language
