Overview The term ‘multimedia’ means different things to different people, depending on the context of their practice Concept of Multimedia has changed radically as we have embraced Information Age

Multimedia and the wider society Impact has been wide The traditional media Newspapers, magazines, television New media The internet and www Online information from traditional vendors New information via websites, blogs, podcasts, vidcasts, social software, networked info.

Multimedia and education Great potential for multimedia as a more powerful and engaging medium to support teaching and learning Supports e-learning, any where, any time Supports different learning styles

Multimedia and education Supports a more diverse and creative environment for both teachers and students to present work No longer handwritten, or simply typed… now presentations, desk top publishing, online publications of various sorts Supports sharing and collaboration using wikis, social software of various sorts

Multimedia and education Not without problems Ongoing research looking at issue of how best to support teaching and learning using (mainly) online multimedia resources Need to think carefully about students and their individual needs Need to provide resources which address disabilities of various sorts Need to keep up in a rapidly changing environment

Multimedia Essentially, the study of multimedia is no longer about web design, use of images, colours, fonts, sound, video New online platforms need to be analysed and assessed for their potential as educational and other resources Designers of educational resources need to factor in the changing nature of mm to provide an efficient, relevant and appealing learning platforms
