AIM# 19: Liquid Density/Density Review Do Now: What is the density of an object with a mass of 10 grams and a volume of 2 mL? Homework: 1) Quiz Friday on Density/Volume/Measuring

2 Question? If the candy bar has a density of 4 g/cubic centermeters…..
What would happen if I took the candy bar and split it in half? Would I have the same density? Why or why not?

3 Liquid Layers If you pour together liquids that don’t mix and have different densities, they will form liquid layers. The liquid with the highest density will be on the bottom. The liquid with the lowest density will be on the top.

4 Viscosity Viscosity is a measure of a fluid's resistance to flow
Honey is more viscous than water

5 Liquid Layers Check out this picture . Which layer has the highest density? Which layer has the lowest density? Imagine that the liquids have the following densities: 10g/cm3. 3g/cm3. 6g/cm3. 5g/cm3. Which number would go with which layer?

6 Liquid Layers – Try with your neighbor
Which liquid has the highest density? Which liquid has the lowest density? Which liquid has the middle density?

7 Liquid Layers – Try on your own!
Imagine that the liquids on the right have the following densities: 15g/cm g/cm3 3g/cm g/cm3 7g/cm g/cm3 Match the colors to the correct densities. 3g/cm3 7g/cm3 9g/cm3 10g/cm3 12g/cm3 15g/cm3

8 Review What is the formula for density?

9 In Your Journals…. 1) Write Title: Density and the Date 10/11/11
2) Explain in your words or drawings density. Include the difference between mass and weight and volume. 3) Explain what happens when you cut an object in half. What happens to the density? 4) Explain liquid density. ( What happens when different liquids are mixed together?) Explain what happens when an object in water has a density more than or less than 1 g/cubic centimeter Use complete sentences! Colored pencils are up front. You may use any of the labs we have discussed or done.
