2 Do Now: On a sheet of paper list the physical activities that you participate in on a regular basis

3 Objectives Understand the importance of regular physical activity through out lifespan Examine the effects of regular physical activity on the body systems Analyze the relationship between regular physical activity and disease prevention Discover ways to incorporate physical activity into daily life

5 Physical Fitness The ability to carry out daily tasks easily and have enough reserve energy to respond to unexpected demands

6 Benefits of Physical Activity
Cardiovascular System Strengthens heart muscle, allowing it to pump blood more efficiently

7 Continued… Respiratory System Able to breathe larger amounts of air
Muscle used in respiration don’t tire easily Ex: Run farther with out being out of breath

8 Continued… Nervous System Respond more quickly to stimuli
Physical activity can improve reaction time

9 Inactivity More than 1 and 3 teens are not active
Activity declines in teen years 73% of 9th graders 61% of 12th graders

10 A way of life that involves little activity
Sedentary Lifestyle A way of life that involves little activity Ex: Watching T.V. Playing video games Playing on the computer Negative Effects: Weight gain Type 2 diabetes STOP

Osteoporosis – decrease in bone density, producing porous and fragile bones Reduced ability to manage stress Decreased opportunity to meet and form friendships

CDC reports: More then ½ of American adults are overweight 17% of children to teens (age 2- 19) are overweight

Ability of the heart, lungs, blood vessels to utilize and send fuel and oxygen to the body’s tissues during long periods of moderate-to vigorous activity

16 Muscular Strength Amount of force a muscle can exert Example?
Weight- lifting Rope climbing

17 Muscular Endurance The ability of the muscles to perform physical tasks over a period of time without becoming fatigued

18 Flexibility The ability to move a body part through a range of motion

19 Body Composition The ratio of body fat to lean body muscle Including:
Bone Water Connective tissue

20 How does Exercise benefit YOU?
Exercise improves your mood Exercise combats chronic diseases Exercise helps you manage your weight Exercise boosts your energy level Exercise promotes better sleep Exercise can be FUN!
