Adventure Protagonist lives by wits and skills consistently placed in in dangerous situations. “To Build a Fire”- Main character struggles to survive in a snowstorm.

Symbol Stands for or represents something else. “Moby Dick”- The whale symbolizes evil.

Archetype Patterns in literature found around the world. “Red Badge of Courage”-The archetype is just like any other war story.

Epigraph Quote at the beginning of a chapter in a book.

Romanticism Literary and artistic movement, focused on imagination. “to build a fire”- the man was romantic with his dog?

Wilderness Gothic Medieval, wild, or mysterious “to build a fire”- weird story about how he manages to survive.

Captivity Narrative Someone being held captive. “To Build a Fire”- The main character isnt being held by a person physically but lost in a snow storm.

Imagery Descriptive or figurative launguage that creates images. Uses the 5 senses. “Red Badge of Courage”- very descriptive about the blood and gore in the war scenes.

Naturalism Literary movement Viewed people as helpless victoms of nature. “To Build a Fire”- In the artic surrounded by nature.

Historical Details Details that show time period of a work. “Red Badge of Courage”- you can tell the time period because it’s a based around a war that we are aware of.
