Connecting Photosynthesis & Cell Respiration
Are you ready to turn in homework tomorrow? which did you do? How to study for the quiz? Pink packet pages 20-25 Review your homework Look at the powerpoint online Time for a Brain Check!!

Carbon Cycle Reaction occurs in stroma
Pink Page 22: Fill in the last details of photosynthesis LIGHT-DEPENDENT Reaction occurs in thylakoid membrane Figure 8-7 Photosynthesis: An Overview Section 8-3 H2O O2 Sugars CO2 Chloroplast Chloroplast NADP+ ADP + P Carbon Cycle Reaction occurs in stroma Light- Dependent Reactions Calvin Cycle ATP NADPH
3
Photosynthesis vs Cell Respiration What similarities do you see?
4
Chemical Energy and Food
PHOTOSYNTHESIS ___________ + _________ + ___________ →_______________ + __________ 6 CO2 6 H2O C6H12O6 6O2 CELLULAR RESPIRATION C6H12O6 6 CO2 _____________ + _________ →________ + __________ + __________ 6O2 6 H2O The two equations are exact opposites!
5
Uses of ATP Powers protein pumps in the cell membrane
Powers cilia and flagella Power for synthesis of proteins Powers motor proteins that contract muscles Provides cell energy
6
Cell Respiration 3 Major Steps GLYCOLYSIS: break glucose in ½
KREBS CYCLE: keep breaking the carbon bonds Collect H’s and electrons as you go! NAD+ becomes NADH Electron Transport Chain NADH drops of electrons & ATP gets made!
7
CELL RESPIRATION : pink packet p21
How exactly does your food get turned into energy? 6O2 + C6H12O6 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy ? Glucose Electron transport Glycolysis Krebs cycle Fermentation (without oxygen) Alcohol or lactic acid

What organelle is pictured
What organelle is pictured? Why is it important to know that there are 3 steps and that they are organized like this? Mitochondria – structure & function. By compartmentalizing parts of the process, the process is more efficient because there is a designated organelle. It’s crucial that there are two membranes – an inner & an outer because a gradient must be formed. That is the major understanding when studying this process in detail – it is a theme throughout all of biology: life will perform complicated steps and expend energy in order to set-up a reaction later.
9
Autotroph or Heterotroph?
10
Photosynthesis vs cell respiration
Look at your card & sort yourself! Should you be in the “photosynthesis” area? Should you be in the “cell respiration” area? Should you stand in the MIDDLE because you do BOTH!? Photosynthesis vs cell respiration
