2 What is CELDT? 3 Who is an English Learner? The Official definition: “…a student who does not speak English or whose native language is not English and who is not currently able to perform ordinary classroom work in English.” (CA Education Code section 306[a]) (CA Education Code section 306[a])

5 Areas/Questions Listening: Areas: Strategies & applications Questions: Oral directions, extended listening comprehension (passage), rhyming, listening comprehension (short, school situation)

6 Speaking: Areas: Strategies & application Questions: oral vocabulary, speech functions, choosing & giving reasons, 4-picture narrative

7 Reading: Areas: Word analysis, fluency, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, literary response & analysis Questions: Alphabet recognition, word analysis, fluency & systematic vocabulary development, comprehension, literary analysis

8 Writing: Areas: Strategies & application, English-language conventions Questions: Writing words, grammar & structure, writing sentences, writing a short composition

9 How long does it take? K-1: ~15-30 minutes per domain (2) – Speaking is given individually, listening as a group 2-12: speaking is given individually & takes ~10 minutes. Listening, reading, & writing are given as a group and take ~2 hours to complete

10 Who can give it? Only certified/trained examiners who are proficient in English and employed by the district. NOT untrained classroom teachers/aides NOT parents/volunteers

11 Scoring… Separate scores are given for listening, speaking, reading, & writing. Scores are combined for an Overall Score & Comprehension Score Formulas: Overall Score = (.25 x listening)+(.25 x speaking)+(.25 x rdg.)+(.25 x writing) Comprehension Score = (.50 x listening)+(.50 x reading)

13 Performance Level Descriptors Beginner: 1.ELs demonstrate little/no receptive or productive skills. 2.May understand a few concrete details (with support) 3.May respond to simple communication, but with errors 4.Oral/written production = disconnected words & memorized responses 5.Frequent errors make communication difficult

14 Early Intermediate 1.ELs continue to develop receptive & productive skills 2.Able to identify & understand more concrete details during unmodified instruction 3.Respond with increasing ease to varied communication/instruction 4.Oral/written = phrases & memorized statements/questions 5.Frequent errors still complicate communication

15 Intermediate 1.ELs begin to tailor language to meet communication/learning demands 2.Increasing accuracy 3.Able to understand concrete details & some major abstract concepts 4.Respond with increasing ease to more varied communication/learning demands 5.Oral/written = have expanded sentences 6.Errors still complicate communication

18 Who can see the CELDT results? Only: Authorized district personnel The student Parent/guardians

19 What are the CELDT results used for? Identification of ELs need to develop LSRW skills in English Identification of IFEP students Reclassifying RFEP students (1 of 4 parameters) Annual data re: district/school ELs English acquisition
