Tentative Plan for This Week: 1. Monday-Wednesday: Pre and Post-film discussion activities and finishing the film 2. Thursday: Mini-FISHBOWLS [second TKAM practice] by rows with ROW WORK assigned Monday 3. Friday: Final Quiz on TKAM –open note and book OR start the Great Depression / TKAM Headline Newspaper Project

Tentative Plan for Next Week: If we started the Great Depression project Friday, then there will be a group quiz on Monday. If we took the quiz Friday, then…. Monday-Wednesday: Work on “character and culture” – two practice and the third is a quiz Thursday: Introduction ? of mini research and writing project on the world of TKAM and the Great Depression Friday: Work day? Need to check computer lab reservations which may reorder plans for this week.

This week you will be able to: 1. Continue to practice your reading and analyzing of literature skills 2. Participate in physical debates & discussions with peers relating to TKAM 3. Continue to practice your discussion & peer evaluation skills in a mini FISHBOWL for the upcoming final exam 4. Understand, explain, & analyze major themes, symbols, and imagery from TKAM

Pre-Film Activity for Today : TKAM Quote Reaction Partner Discussion "Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.“ - Atticus Finch, by Harper Lee: To Kill a Mockingbird What is Atticus’s message to his children with this? What life-lesson is he teaching them? Discussion: How do you define courage? Who do you identify as a courageous person (other than Atticus) in life or literature? Do you agree or disagree with this definition of courage?

ROW WORK for Thursday– I will collect this! 1. Write your answers out on a separate sheet of paper 2. Be ready to “discuss” this as a mini FISHBOWL practice on Thursday Your answers are important because… 1. … they will REVIEW key elements from the story for EVERYONE’S understanding 2. … you need to show you understand the novel and are prepared to discuss it 3. …these are ways to practice for the final and become better at “discussion” formats /10 Daily Assignment of written answers /10 Participation in the FISHBOWL

ROW #1: List 4 MAJOR characters who are SYMBOLIC mockingbirds – people who are or were innocents and were hurt/wounded/killed You must be able to explain… - why they are mockingbirds – innocents? - who hurt them? - why were they a target? - how did it impact them and others around them?

Next, find 4 things in the story which PROVE this is a SOURTHERN GOTHIC novel. Here’s an example: “Boo” is another word for ghost– a character’s name takes on a supernatural tone

Post-Film Activity for Today: Stand up for…in TKAM I can name 3 characters who have demonstrated courage [theme] and explain how they did so I now understand the whole “Mrs. Dubose-Jem” incident through the lens of courage and why the flower in the box for Jem is a sign of Mrs. Dubose’s forgiveness [theme] of Jem for ruining her flowers If I had been Mrs. Dubose, I would have forgiven Jem: Discuss I believe Atticus did the right thing in having Jem read to Mrs. Dubose: ? Did he “repay” for the damage he’d caused? ? How did he get to see real courage – not a man with a gun—courage in personal strength to do the right thing?

Pre-Film Activity for Today: Stand up for…in TKAM I now understand why Scout’s behavior at the dinner table was wrong and was punished by Cal in the kitchen: With a partner, brainstorm 3 possible problems that Atticus and his family can anticipate experiencing as Maycomb residents learn he is defending Tom Robinson I agree with Atticus: Failure to do his job and defend Tom Robinson to his full ability would mean that he could not “hold his head up”– not for himself or with his family…Discuss How does Jem’s behavior indicate he is maturing? Discuss:

Pre-Film Activity for Today : TKAM Quote to Ponder "Best way to clear the air is to have it all out in the open." - Atticus Finch, by Harper Lee in To Kill a Mockingbird How does this demonstrate that Atticus is “an advocate for truth and justice,” a THEME in the novel? Discussion: How can you tell he believes strongly in standing up for what he believes in? It can be so hard, sometimes, to stand up for the right thing, do the right thing: WHY? Why is the Atticus character so, so important in this book in conveying Harper Lee’s message about racism?
