ESF Member Organisation Forum Science in Society Relationships SiS – Science for the benefit of Society and Society for the benefit of Science Diversity of context and cultures – and a lot in common: all sciences a variety of societal actors should be involved rewards to individuals and institutions necessary communication is (only) part of the answer – a need for change of culture in the scientific community sufficient funding must be ensured evaluation of quantity, quality and impact a key issue

ESF Member Organisation Forum Science in Society Relationships Recommendations: Every Research Funding or Research Performing Organization, RFO/RPO, need * Commitment in policies and strategies – shared by all employees * Actions (funding, activities….) appropriate to objectives, context and culture

ESF Member Organisation Forum Science in Society Relationships Learning and improving Principles common views on SiS are emerging in Europe learn from each other and share best practices join capacities to develop common needs experiment Instruments networks sharing experiences common agreement(s) joint development of indicators, methods of evaluation, impact assessment etc research on SiS, its importance and impact

ESF Member Organisation Forum Science in Society Relationships Rewarding Researchers and Institutions Introduce evaluation methods and indicators Activities Resources – financial and human Impact measurements Indicators – simple, transparent, accepted Make SiS intrinsic part of funding and merits SiS requirements at grant application and in reports Use SiS as a differentiator in peer reviews Start to collect data on SiS Allocate money for SiS in grants and for SiS-promoting activities Consider SiS for promotion, salary and funding

ESF Member Organisation Forum Science in Society Relationships Conclusions Much is done, more is needed, development required: Embedded in culture + responding to new challenges Clear Commitment to SiS in policy and strategy SiS activities and processes with - Quality, transparency and experiments - Researchers rewarded for SiS achievements - Networks sharing experiences and best practices - Jointly develop systems for indicators, evaluations and impact assessment
