Essential Question: How are air pressure and altitude and temperature related? Science 7

Homework: Science Study for your “Earth’s Atmosphere” Unit Test on Monday Study guide is available on the wiki, but should already be in your binder

Next Science Test: “Earth’s Atmosphere” Unit Test Monday, September 28 Study guide is also posted online

Today’s Topic: How are air pressure, altitude, and temperature related?

Video: Air Pressure

Air Pressure: Vocabulary This is the total force or weight of all of the air pushing on a given area; the lower the altitude, the higher this is. AIR PRESSURE

Air Pressure: Vocabulary This is a device for measuring air pressure. BAROMETER

Key Atmosphere Concepts that you MUST know! As the temperature of air heats up, the air EXPANDS (in other words, it becomes LESS dense) As the temperature of air cools down, the air CONTRACTS (in other words, it becomes MORE dense) As Air Density Increases, Air pressure also INCREASES As Air pressure Decreases, air density also DECREASES Fluids (such as air) move from areas of HIGH pressure to areas of LOW pressure Air pressure is different in different places on Earth because the Sun does not heat the Earth evenly Because air pressure is different in different places on Earth, air is constantly moving from one place to another, from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure within the atmosphere Air moving from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure parallel to Earth’s surface is called WIND

Video: What causes the wind?

Exit Ticket: Access the “Exit Tickets” page of DeBolt’s wiki Click on the link for today’s exit ticket Complete the quiz before leaving class Name format: “your period number, Last name, First name”

The Remainder of Class… Once your group is finished with their exit tickets, get out your study guides for this unit Look over the study guides as a group: are there any questions or vocabulary that some of your group members are confused by? Talk about these trouble vocabulary and questions as a group to try an understand what they are
