Interactive Notebooks Students do –Provide evidence of their learning –Share ideas to generate more ideas –Refer back to them as they work Students do not –Only include teacher generated ideas and activities –Copy vocabulary words –Paste in worksheets to complete

Constructivism Students do –Develop their own understanding –Experience phenomena before assigning a label –Connect concepts to experiences in the classroom Is Not –Pre-teaching concepts or vocabulary before the activity –Focusing on definitions rather than experiences that explain concepts

Interaction/Processing Students do –Talk with one another and their teacher about small chunks of learning –Read, write, think, discuss and refine ideas Students do not –Listen to lecture for long periods –Work in isolation –Work in pairs or groups without true collaboration

Inquiry Is –Organized –Teacher managed –Content based –Student directed –Hands-on Is not –Chaotic –Devoid of content –Everyone doing the same thing

Conceptual Understanding Students can –Relate activities, lessons and labs to enduring understandings and the real world Students cannot –Identify why they’re learning a concept other than for a grade
