Developing a Sustainable Roof Rating System Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing 816 Connecticut Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20006 www.roofingcenter.org

Sustainable Roof Rating System Agenda The Pitch: Why a rating system? The Product: Key rating system details The Plan: From pre-launch to operation Board Action Items The Future

Sustainable Roof Rating System Why a Roof Rating System? Whole building rating systems like LEED fail to address critical roof-related issues: –The many ways roofs contribute to energy and environmental goals –The multiplier effect of the re-roofing market –The importance of roof durability in achieving sustainable buildings

Sustainable Roof Rating System Why a Roof Rating System? A roof rating system is critical to meeting the national goal of “net-zero energy buildings” –Roofs are among the few building components that can save energy and produce energy –Buildings will never achieve net-zero energy without using the roof as a clean energy platform –If we start today, we can install a “net-zero” roof on every building in the nation within 15 to 20 years.

Sustainable Roof Rating System Why a Roof Rating System? No green building can stay green without a durable, sustainable roof –Roof leaks and water damage are the leading cause of premature building failure –New demands on roofs (water collection, energy production, etc.) require even higher levels of durability to assure long-term building performance

Sustainable Roof Rating System Why a Roof Rating System? A credible sustainable roof rating system will build value for the entire roofing industry –Roofing will become a value-added product –Roofing will become a value-added profession –The roofing industry will gain influence in building policy, design and purchase decisions

Sustainable Roof Rating System Why a Roof Rating System? If we don’t do it, someone else will! –Non-roofing associations Rooftop vegetation associations Electrical & PV associations –Standards agencies Federal agencies: EPA, DOE Code agencies: ICC Certification agencies: UL / FM / NSF

Sustainable Roof Rating System CEIR’s Mission Develop an environmentally innovative roof rating system that: –Establishes our industry as the rating system owner –Establishes our members as the accredited system providers –Brings recognition and validation for our customers

Showcase all the ways modern roofing systems contribute to the environment Emphasize the importance of energy: Both saving and producing energy Emphasize the importance of re-roofing – an underserved 3 billion square foot market Emphasize the importance of roof durability in sustainable buildings Make it easy to understand and use to gain rapid public acceptance Sustainable Roof Rating System Roof Rating System Goals

Start with low-slope roofing as the highest priority opportunity Build on the success of LEED, but add improvements to make the program “roof-friendly” Develop a professional working draft to demonstrate the power of the rating system Sustainable Roof Rating System CEIR Initial Strategy

Introduction Categories & Credits Credit Format Points & Weighting Award Classes Sustainable Roof Rating System Working Draft

Re-states our reasons –The multiple contributions of roofing –The multiplier effect of reroofing –The importance of durability Re-states our objectives –Simple and easy to understand –Reflect current green thinking –Provide tangible, practical value Sustainable Roof Rating System Draft Introduction

Similar to LEED –Focus on energy, water and materials –Opportunity for innovation –Added emphasis on durability and life cycle Major categories: –Energy Management –Material Management –Water Management –Durability / Life Cycle Management –Innovation Sustainable Roof Rating System Draft Categories

Sustainable Roof Rating System Draft Credits Energy Management  High R Roofs  Best Energy Practice  Cool Roofs  Air/ Moisture Barrier  Rooftop Energy  Daylighting Material Management  Recycled Content  Material Reuse  Waste Management  Low-VOC Materials Water Management  Storm Water Retention  Water Use Reduction Roof Durability  Durable Roof Insulation  Roof Drainage Design  Roof Traffic Design  Wind Resistance  Moisture Management  Durability Enhancements Life Cycle Management  Roof Maintenance Program  Project Quality Management Innovation in Roofing  Design Innovation  Exemplary Performance  Reg. Roofing Professional

Intent –States the objective of the credit (save energy, produce clean energy, reduce Heat Islands, etc.) Requirements –Defines a measureable standard to achieve –May include pre-requisites and different levels of achievement Technologies & Strategies –Offers suggestions and alternatives for meeting the requirements Committee Discussion –Internal notes to assist review Sustainable Roof Rating System Draft Credit Format Format is similar to LEED & Green Globes

Sustainable Roof Rating System Draft Points & Weighting LEED Weight 56% 25% 8% 12% 100% Adjusted Weight: 45% 20% 6% 9% 80% 20% 100% CEIR Points: 29 11 5 12 62 CEIR Weight: 47% 18% 8% 19% 100% CEIR Target Durability / Life Cycle Relevant LEED Credits Energy-Related 1 Material-Related 2 Water-Related 3 Innovation: Total Relevant Points LEED Points 29 13 4 6 52 (1)Energy Efficiency:19, Renewable Energy: 7,Heat Island: 1, Daylighting: 2 (2)Source:7,Waste Management: 2, Material Reuse: 4 (3)Storm Water: 2, Landscaping Reuse: 2

Sustainable Roof Rating System Draft Award Classes Points 25-29 30-34 35-39 40-44 40+ 45+ Award Class Basic Silver Gold Gold Plus Platinum Platinum Plus Type of Roof Any Gold w/ Energy or Water Any Platinum w/ Energy or Water

Hire/retain/appoint a program manager to coordinate the critical first steps –Key skills: Fund raising, grant writing, public relations Build public awareness through a controlled pre-launch public review –Coordinated by CEIR research director / research committee –Use as a tool to support funding campaign Identify and recruit strategic partners to build public support –Major building owners, building media, trade associations, education providers Leverage growing awareness with a pre-launch funding campaign –Coordinated by CEIR program manager Sustainable Roof Rating System Start-Up Plan: Pre-Launch

Conduct a national media campaign –Media releases, convention presentations, trade show presence Coordinate market demonstration projects with early partners –Establish basic procedures for training, project registration, etc. –Feed results to ongoing media campaign Lock-in ongoing program sponsors –Media, government, trade associations, other non-profits Develop ongoing program structure –Rating system management, training, certification, financing Sustainable Roof Rating System Start-Up Plan: Initial Launch

Accept initial rating system draft Approve next steps by current CEIR staff –Craig: Recruit strategic partners –Jim: Expand buy-in to other industry organizations through a controlled public review process –Mary: Obtain speaking engagements & media placements Approve recruitment of program manager to coordinate funding campaign –Short-term investment to be covered by a portion of funding campaign receipts Sustainable Roof Rating System Board Actions

Sustainable Roof Rating System The Future 50 Million Sq. Ft. of Rated Roofs (25,000 Roofs) Hundreds of Registered Roofing Professionals Millions in Added Industry Revenue Within 5 Years Within 10 Years 1 Billion Sq. Ft. of Rated Rooftops (250,000 Roofs) Thousands of Registered Roofing Professionals Billions in Added Industry Revenue
