NOTE: Never touch test strip with bare hands during or after final polishing or allow strip to come into contact with water. 8 Polish first the ends and then the sides with 150-grit (mesh) silicon carbide grains picked up with a pad of absorbent cotton moistened with isooctane. 9Polish strip uniformly using long strokes that carry beyond the end of the copper strip. 10When strip is clean, with minimal delay, slide copper strip into sample tube. 11Place sample tube into pressure vessel and screw lid on tightly. EquipmentMaterials and Reagents  Solid Block Bath (212 ±2°F)  Stainless Steel Pressure Vessel (See Specifications ASTM D130)  Test Tubes, Borosilicate Glass, 25X150 mm  ASTM Copper Corrosion Standard Plaque  Silicon Carbide Grit Paper, 220 Grit  150-Grit (Mesh) Silicon Carbide Grains  Forceps  Temperature Sensing Device (TSD), Accuracy ±1°C (2°F)  Copper Test Strips (See Specifications ASTM D130)  Steel Wool, Grade 00 or Finer  Isooctane  P8 Qualitative Filter Paper Scope / Objective This procedure details the testing of kerosene to determine the degree of corrosiveness to copper. 2 AreaUnitOperating Procedure #Certified byRevision #DatePage 3LabOPS-LB-PT-02310.11.20112 of 2 Copper Strip Corrosion of Kerosene Continued 12Place pressure cylinder in bath (212 ±2°F) for 2h ±5 mins. 13Remove cylinder from bath using forceps and immerse for few minutes in cool tap water. 14Under hood, with cylinder oriented away from face, carefully remove cylinder lid. 15Remove sample tube and test strip (pour contents of sample tube into beaker) being careful not to touch test strip with bare hands. 16Using forceps, immerse test strip in isooctane and withdraw immediately. 17Blot strip dry (do not rub) with filter paper. 18Compare test strip with copper strip corrosion standard holding both at approximately 45° angle from light source. 19 Interpret results as follows: a.Select the color standard that most closely matches the test strip and rate the sample accordingly. b.If strip is in transition state between 2 standards, rate the sample as the more tarnished classification. c.Refer to Table 1 of ASTM D130 for a written description of each sample classification if needed.
