Welcome To Class Why is a person working out and sweats a lot more likely to get heat stroke when the humidity is high?
2
Agenda Clouds notes Demo Cloud Classification –Foldable Activity Observe Clouds Concept Map
3
Clouds What is a cloud? –Small water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the air –Air is cooled and water vapor condenses
4
Clouds How do clouds form? Water vapor condenses on condensation nuclei –Solid particle in the atmosphere that provides a surface for water to condense –Ice, salt, dust, other particle
5
Cloud Formation Adiabatic Cooling –air mass temp. decreases as the air mass rises and expands Mixing – two masses of moist air meet and cool
6
Cloud Formation Lifting – forced upward movement of air that expands and cools Advective Cooling – air mass temp. decreases as the air mass moves over a cold surface
8
Types of Clouds Low Level – Stratus, nimbostratus, stratocumulus, some Cumulus Mid-level – Cumulus, altocumulus, altostratus High Level – Cirrus, Cirrostratus, Cirrocumulus
9
Key Cloud Terms Nimbo, Nimbus – rain Alto – middle Stratus – layered Cumulus – cotton ball, fluffy look, heap Cirrus – feathery, curl of hair
10
Other Clouds Contrails – formed from exhaust from a jet Mammatus - pouch-like cloud structures and a rare example of clouds in sinking air –Seen after a storm Pileus Clouds – clouds found attached to a mountain top
11
Foldable Activity Fold Paper in half Cut two lines (create 3 tabs) Label the tabs as Cumulus, Stratus, and Cirrus On the inside write information about each type of cloud
12
Cloud Observation Keep a log of Clouds DayCloud(s) seen Percent Sky Cover Explaination
