2 Dachau was established in 1933. Dachau was Germany’s first concentration camp and it began when the prisons were overflowing with people the government didn’t like. This was the first regular concentration camp established by the Nazi government. The police president described this concentration camp as “the first concentration camp for political prisoners.” The Dachau concentration camp was located in southeast Germany on the grounds of an abandoned weapon factory. http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10005214

3 The Dachau camp was a training center for the SS concentration camp guards. It is a huge camp. It would take about an hour to walk around all of the grounds. There were about 30,000 prisoners living there around liberation. http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10005214

4 The Dachau concentration camp was liberated on Sunday, April 29, 1945. The participants in this liberation included: Two divisions of the US Seventh Army 42 nd Rainbow Division 45 th Thunderbird Division The 20 th Armored Division provided support Dachau had one main camp along with 123 other sub camps and factories. 5 Buchenwald was a Nazi concentration camp that was established in Ettersberg, Germany, in July 1937. This was one of the first and largest concentration camp on German grounds. Women were not a part of this concentration camp until late 1943 or early 1944. The name “Buchenwald” was given to the camp on July 28, 1937 from Heinrich Himmler. 7 The Buchenwald concentration camp was liberated on April 11, 1945. It was the first camp to be liberated by Americans troops. The participants in this liberation included 4 soldiers in the Sixth Armored Division and were commanded by General George S. Patton. 8 The Auschwitz concentration camp complex included three main camps and then sub camps, which all consisted of spread out prisoners with forced labor. The camps were located near the German-Polish border which was an area that the Nazis formed in 1939 after invading Poland. The camp was originally founded for Polish political prisoners. 9 Auschwitz was divided into three major camps: Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II, and Auschwitz III, along with many sub camps. Auschwitz I was the main camp. Auschwitz II is also known as Birkenau and was established on October 8, 1941. 10 Troops liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp on January 27, 1945. This camp was liberated by soldiers of the Soviet Union in the First Army of the Ukrainian front. When the concentration camp was liberated, the prisoners were on their own.
