2. INTRODUCTION Born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy Dreamed of sailing at sea
Took short trips on the sea at young age
Became a sailor when he was older

3. GOAL Determined to find western sea route to Asia
Look for gold, silk, and spices
Claim lands for Spain

4. SPAIN Moved to Spain when wife, Felipa Perestrello, died.
Showed plan to the King and Queen of Spain many times
Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand agreed to help him

5. VOYAGE First expedition with 3 ships and 90 men
The ships were called the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria
Started sailing on August 3, 1492 across Atlantic Ocean.
Landed on an island named San Salvador
Went look for gold and spices and landed on island called Hispaniola
Claimed land for Spain by putting a flag in the sand

6. EXPEDITION Sailed four voyages Discovered different land and islands
Brought back gold trinkets, parrots, and a few Indians for the Queen and King

7. CONCLUSION Did not accomplish goal
Did not find a new western sea route to Asia
Never received the honor and rewards for the discoveries
Found New World later named America
Changed the world forever with the voyages
Other explorers followed his sea route to New World
Died on May 20, 1506 in Valladolid, Spain
