EnergyTransfer

MOVE Energy can MOVE from one place to another (like lightning)! TRANSFER This is called Energy TRANSFER

Energy always transfers to a LESS place that has LESS energy. Think of it like sharing: giving energy to a place that doesn’t have as much. The ice has LESS thermal energy, so the drink TRANSFERS TRANSFERS energy to the ice, causing it to melt!

TRANSFER There are 3 ways to TRANSFER energy: 1) Conduction = energy transferred by touching The fork will conduct electricity when it touches the outlet.

2) Radiation = energy transferred without touching The fire’s thermal energy is radiating out to warm the room

3) Convection = energy transferred when heat rises, then cools in a circular motion.

Can You Identify the Energy Transfer? Decide if each example shows conduction, radiation, or convection.

You can burn your hand from putting a metal stick in the candle flame. Conduction because you were actually touching it.

Getting an X-ray Radiation, because it doesn’t touch you

It is hotter in your attic and upstairs than it is downstairs. Convection because the heat is rising, while the cool falls.

Lightning burning a tree Conduction because it touches the tree

Getting cooked from the inside out by an atomic bomb Radiation because you aren’t touching the bomb

Water boiling in a pot Convection because the heat rises and cools in a circular motion.

Cooking in the microwave Radiation because nothing actually touches your food.

Static shock from a doorknob Conduction because you had to touch the doorknob

Toasting (not burning) a marshmellow Radiation because no touching

Lava lamp bubbling Convection, because the heat of the lightbulb makes the bubbles rise and fall in a circle.
