The milky way galaxy Consists of :
2
The Sun Is a star that escaped from a cluster Is the power source that all living organisms on earth needs to survive Obtains the energy by nuclear fission
3
Nuclear Fission
4
Planets Before 2005 we thought there were 9 planets In 2006 a scientists discovered another planet like object with a location after Pluto called Eres This planet caused discussions and votes to define what is a planet A planet is an object that orbits a sun and clears the path in front of it as does so
5
So what does this mean? There are now eight planets in the milky way galaxy - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune And two planets are dwarf planets - Pluto and Eres
6
Mercury Has the fastest orbital Because it is earth like…it is called a Terrestrial planet The second smallest planet It has no atmosphere It is craterlike and is very dense (probably an iron core) Very hot days and cold nights
7
Venus Another terrestrial planet Similar to earth size, mass, density and location in the solar system It is brighter to us than any other planet forexcept our moon It has thick clouds and land surface like earth and mars It reaches up to 425 degrees Celcius and has 97% Carbon Dioxide
8
Mars Looks like a red ball Has polar white caps Atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide It has many volcanos and canyons Very small amounts of water vapour It has two natural satelites
9
Jupiter Is 2 ½ times greater mass than all the combined mass of the remaining planets, satelites and asteroids Rotates more rapidly than any other panet (10 earth hrs) Has a red spot – a cyclonic storm Looks like bands of redish brown colour due to wind system Winds driven by the heat the inner part of the planet produces Hydrogen, helium, methane, ammonia, water and sulfur atmosphere Has at least 28 moons
10
Saturn Takes 29.46 earth years to make a revolution Twice as far from the sun as Jupiter but similar in structure to Jupiter Has prominent rings It has minimum of 30moons and millions of natural satelites
11
Uranus Rotates on its side Looks blue because of high methane gas content Similar to Neptune but warmer than Neptune It has a ring too
12
Neptune Bluish, fuzzy disk Some white clouds (possibly frozen methane) It has many moons It has small storms like Jupiter
