Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems MODULE 1 Introduction
2
Lesson 1 Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems Welcome Welcome to Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems. This course focuses primarily on the interior of a piping system as well as the installation of gas appliances. This course has been developed in partnership with the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) and industry experts to promote the safe and efficient use of propane as a preferred energy resource. The propane industry is committed to providing the highest level of safety and service to its customers, employees, and the entire propane community. Safety is at the heart of our commitment, and high-quality training is an essential tool for ensuring your safety and continuing success. 2

Lesson 1 Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems Safety Mission Safety is an industry-wide responsibility that extends to everyone who handles propane. The more you know about dispensing, storing, and using propane the more you help reduce the risk of accidents. Each of us in the propane industry can contribute to a shared mission by doing all we can to increase public confidence in the safety and value of propane. Safety Goals To fully achieve this safety mission, the propane industry has established five critical goals: Reduce accidents and incidents. Improve safety awareness. Increase consumer confidence. Strengthen propane employees’ skills and knowledge. Improve regulatory compliance. 4

Lesson 1 Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems Who Should Take This Course? Since safety and reliability are everyone’s business, employees throughout the propane industry will find this training useful, and perhaps even life saving. This course is designed to train: Installation and service personnel. Sales personnel. Managers and supervisors. The information, learning activities, and quizzes are designed to help you safely install appliances and interior vapor distribution systems. However, all personnel in the propane industry will gain a basic overview of key concepts and safety strategies for working with propane systems. 5
6
Lesson 1 Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems Course Purpose The purpose of this course is to provide current information, practices, and testing procedures to safely and efficiently install propane appliances and interior vapor distribution systems. This course is designed to be both a learning resource and a career development tool. Additionally, this course will help prepare you for NPGA’s CETP certification. 6
7
Lesson 1 Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems Course Objectives After completing this course, you will be able to: Identify different appliance types, requirements, and restrictions. Understand the design and installation considerations for gas appliances. Explain how to design and install natural, direct, and mechanical draft venting systems. Identify how to determine system pressure and load and other piping considerations. Understand how to convert gas appliances and add appliances to a system. Understand the process of installing interior piping. 7
8
Lesson 1 Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems Course Format Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems is divided into eight modules, each with one or more lessons. Each module also includes: Up-to-date information, procedures, and regulations. Interactive learning activities to apply your knowledge. Questions to check for your understanding. End-of-module quiz. 8
9
Lesson 1 Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems Course Resources and References There are various national standards and codes that are developed to ensure the safe installation of gas burning appliances and their gas piping systems including: The American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). 9
10
Lesson 1 Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems Course Codes Each of these organizations develops regulations, codes, or standards referenced throughout this course. Here are the two most common code references: NFPA 54: National Fuel Gas Code: This publication provides standards for the installation of fuel gas piping systems, appliances, equipment, and related accessories. NFPA 211: Standards for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel Burning Appliances: This publication contains provisions for the design and construction of chimneys, fireplaces, venting systems, and solid-fuel burning appliances, and includes requirements for the construction, assembly, and installation of these systems. Always check with your supervisor to determine all of the safety codes that apply to your job responsibilities. As a general rule, it is important that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing and using propane and propane-related products. 10
11
Lesson 1 Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems Course Handbooks The NFPA 54 code handbook helps explain codes within the industry and provide commentary that brings the legalistic language of the code to life. The handbook can be used to help company managers, supervisors, and you apply code requirements on the job. The references to NFPA 54 and other codes and standards, are included in this training to: Increase your awareness of these important resources. Provide a general overview of how these codes and standards govern your work. Show you how these codes and standards relate to concepts presented in the training. Provide background for you to better understand rules and regulations at your place of work. Familiarize you with codes that can be used as resources during your certification test. 11

Lesson 1 Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems Introduction Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems, describes how to design and install a vapor distribution system inside a structure. Other CETP courses, Designing and Installing Exterior Vapor Distribution Systems and Placing Vapor Distribution Systems and Appliances into Operation describe how to install the exterior portion of a piping system and how to start up its appliances. This course focuses on the interior of a piping system as well as the installation of gas appliances. Before getting into the specifi cs of this course, let’s take a moment to talk about its structure and some things to keep in mind as you move through. 13
14
LESSON 5 Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems Introduction This course assumes you are already familiar with the concepts found in the courses mentioned above, including the different appliance categories and general exterior piping installation procedures (including how to flare tubing and thread piping). It focuses on the design and installation of appliances, venting, and gas piping. In addition, the course explains how to calculate combustion air; a key component of our system design. After completing this lesson, you will be able to: Understand how this course is designed and that its key components of appliance installation, proper venting and pipe sizing are all interrelated. 14
15
Lesson 1 Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems Course Structure This course first discusses how to design interior vapor distribution systems and then install appliances by concentrating on three main areas: Appliances Venting Gas piping and tubing In the design phase, you must examine how to select an appropriate appliance, properly vent that appliance, and choose proper piping materials. After you have completed the design and written the piping plan, you will focus on procedures and techniques to install the system. 15
16
Lesson 1 Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems Course Topics You will cover the following topics in this course: Selecting appliances and how this impacts the design of an entire system. Computing combustion, ventilation, and dilution air. Designing a venting system. Designing gas piping and creating a piping plan. Installing appliances. Installing venting systems. Installing gas piping. 16
17
Lesson 1 Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems Interrelationships While taking this course, it is important to remember these topics are all interrelated. You must consider the appliance selection, venting, and piping design together because they impact each other. For example, the appliance you choose will then dictate the type of venting it will require as well as the piping needed. It is important to understand that each piece of the process affects the design of the entire system. Try to remember these interrelationships as we move through the course. Each piece will be discussed in detail, but be mindful of how each piece relates to one another. You must consider the entire system as a whole to include the piping, venting, and appliances among other things. Let’s get started. 17
