The Emerging Broadband Environment and Implications for the User Experience Presentation for Carnegie Mellon University Libraries October 12, 2005 Tony DiMaso Verizon Corporate Strategy & Development
2
2 “Compelling User Experience” A Compelling User Experience Is the key to building a loyal user community and is a critical element for Sustainable Advantage In a world of intensifying competition and rapid change and innovation
3
3 Major Paradigms Anytime/ Anywhere connectivity Unified Experience– network and device Personalized Lifestyle-enabling Convergence Mobile Paradigm Internet Paradigm Seamless Mobility Unified Control Unified Management Content Portability Cross-platform licensing Cross-platform pricing Remote services activation Time and place shifting Regulatory paradigm shifts Unified QOS and security Device proliferation Broadband Paradigm Bandwidth to the user Interactive & Visual Content-enabling Global Scope Control at the Edge Services as Applications Access vs.Transport
4
4 “The Virtuous/ Vicious Cycle” This interaction is accelerating and intensifying with expanding content, new technology platforms, and escalating user expectations User Expectations Access anytime/ anywhere Easy to use and manage Secure and supported Content Entertainment & information Traditional & emerging media Personalized & interactive Technology More versatile devices More powerful networks Efficient navigation tools

8 Convergence Convergence… provides a unified user experience with services and applications available across multiple access technologies and devices in support of an increasingly mobile communications environment Device Convergence Combining multiple access-based services to create a unified user experience with a single service offering (e.g., mobile/broadband roaming, unified messaging or location services) Combining multiple functions into a single device that accesses multiple services across multiple access technologies (e.g., multi-purpose cell phones, organizers or storage devices) Combining separate networks (voice, data, video, etc.) and support systems to create a unified networking infrastructure Unified Core (Control and Service) Multi- access Service Providers PSTN Operations Support Systems Service Convergence Network Convergence Source: inCode, VZ SD&P
9
9 Device Convergence Multi-Functional Capability New devices incorporate the functionality of multiple, single- purpose devices Users often accept design and functionality tradeoffs in exchange for reduced device clutter Multi-Radio Capability Dual-mode handsets, multi-radio PDAs, etc. Dual-mode handsets allow users to make cellular calls as usual, plus calls over the fixed line using VoIP or PSTN when close to home/office/hotspots Bluetooth UMA handsets are shipping now; Wifi UMA and Wifi SIP begin shipping later in 2005 More than 15 Wifi enabled handsets are expected to be commercially available by mid- 2006 (Source: FMCA) Device Convergence is accelerating on multiple fronts

16
16 Things to think about The future of libraries –Library as portal or portals as libraries? –What is the “business model”? Creating a compelling user experience –Physical and virtual –Terrestrial and mobile Key elements –The content (proprietary, focused, etc) –The experience – technology integration
17
17 Thoughts on the Future Really compelling – raising the bar Re-defining connectivity and interaction Intelligent Networks and Ecosystems Levels of value- secure, transactional “Its not about searching, its about finding” Convergence and true mobility Multiple access technologies The (virtuous/ vicious) world of virtually unlimited options
