ALCOHOL DURING PREGNANCY HOW ALCOHOL AFFECTS A FETUS *Unborn baby’s liver cannot process alcohol *1 st few weeks most dangerous (most women don’t know they are pregnant)

Pregnancy (cont) Causes FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) *Very severe physical and mental problems *Heart, liver, kidney defects *Growth problems *Learning, attention, *Memory and problem solving

ALCOHOLISM Disease in which a person has a physical or psychological dependence on alcohol ALCOHOLIC: an addict who is dependant on alcohol SYMPTOMS: Craving for alcohol, loss of control (cannot limit amount drank), physical withdrawal symptoms (nausea, sweating, shaky, anxious), Tolerance (need more to feel effects), Personal Problems (health, family, legal)

ALCOHOLICS FACTORS AFFECTING ALCOHOLICS Genetic link – children of alcoholics are 4 x’s more likely to be alcoholics if a parent is. Environment link – peers, family, stress, media etc. pressures us to drink

STAGES OF ALCOHOLISM STAGE 1 - ABUSE Begins with social drinking or drinking to relax. Blackouts, memory loss, and regular drinking STATE 2 - DEPENDENCE Cannot stop drinking, person hides problem School, job, relationships suffer STAGE 3 – ADDICTION Drinking becomes most important thing. Liver damage severe. Cannot live without

CO DEPENDENCY People who love alcoholics and ignore their own needs to help out the alcoholic COST Monetary: Millions of dollars lost on alcohol Personal/Family: Relationships lost Health Care: Billions on treatment for alcoholics and for counseling for family / loved ones

ASSIGNMENT Take your ad – trace some part of it onto your paper. Instead of the happy or good things shown in the ad, redraw it with bad consequences (bad liver picture, baby with small eyes, etc) Use the consequences / outcomes we have covered in class DUE WEDNESDAY – make sure to color it
