1 The Renaissance The learner will be able to: analyze the origin of the Italian & Northern Renaissances, in order to understand the evolution of culture within Europe. –Guided Instruction –Document Analysis

2 WarmUp #1 1. Analyze the map on pg. 436 & answer the questions regarding European trade in the 1300’s. 2. Read the “Causes of the Renaissance” (quick fact box) on pg. 439 & write 1 concise sentence explaining, in your own words, why the Renaissance began.

3 The Italian Renaissance: 1350-1500 Renaissance = “rebirth” –looking back to Greco-Roman times for inspiration began in Italy & spread north to rest of Europe Characteristics: –urban: city-states are most powerful –secular (non-religious) outlook –emphasized human ability high regard for individual accomplishment (Renaissance Man: someone good at everything = Leonardo da Vinci)

4 Humanism humanism: emphasis on human intellect & capability Petrarch: father of Renaissance humanism grew into the study of the humanities (i.e. literature, history, art)

5 Italian City-States Venice, Florence & Milan: most powerful city-states Venice: traded all over Mediterranean Florence: banking hub –controlled by de Medici family –cultural center for Italy –Lorenzo de Medici: great patron of the arts a wealthy individual who pays to have art created

6 Niccolo Machiavelli Machiavelli: politician in Florence –lost favor & exiled –wanted to return –wrote book of statecraft dedicated to the de Medicis the Prince: how to gain & keep power Machiavelli believed good leaders should be amoral: do best for the city regardless of if it is morally right or wrong –“by any means necessary”
