CGEA NUMERACY PD August 15 th 2012

WHY REVIEW? Response to CGEA mid-cycle review in 2010 Numeracy units at lower levels too big Too many concepts covered Number not explicit enough

HOW AND WHO? project reference group comprised of numeracy practitioner experts feedback from practitioner focus group workshop held at the CMM CGEA/ESL PD day three regional public consultations draft units uploaded onto the ACFE website for feedback

WHAT? Objectives: Revise the existing nine CGEA Initial Course, Certificate I Introductory and Certificate I numeracy unit Break the existing units at each of these lower three levels into smaller units Make more explicit the role that number plays in the numeracy and mathematics units at these levels

WHAT? Modify units to reflect current revisions to the Numeracy component of the revised Australian Core Skills Framework Update the existing elements, performance criteria, range statements, evidence guide, to reflect focus of unit

WHAT? CGEA Certificate II and Certificate III Make applicable to all contexts –further education, workplace Modify units to reflect current revisions to the Numeracy component of the revised Australian Core Skills Framework No structural changes to be made Update the existing elements, performance criteria, range statements, evidence guide to reflect reviewed units Strong foundation for a range of pathways

WHAT HAS CHANGED? Initial, Certificate I (Introductory) and Certificate I Choose 4 out of 6 units instead of 2 out of 3 for Units broken down into: -Numbers and money -Location and direction -Measurement (including time) -Shape and design -Numerical information -Statistical information

WHAT’S CHANGED? Time is now included in measurement Knowledge required in lower units has been increased, particularly in number Content spelt out more resulting in more performance criteria but not necessarily more content First number unit is about using numbers and money (not just money) Second number unit is about extracting and using number from texts Area and angle are included in Certificate I measurement

Course in Initial General Education for Adults Previous unitsRevised units VBQU114 Recognise time, money and directions VU20783 Recognise numbers and money in simple, highly familiar situations VU20784 Recognise, give and follow simple and familiar oral directions VBQU115 Recognise measurement and design VU20785 Recognise measurements in simple, highly familiar situations VU20786 Recognise shape and design in simple, highly familiar situations VBQU116 Recognise numerical and statistical information VU20787 Recognise and locate simple numerical information in short, simple highly familiar texts VU20788Recognise and locate numerical information in simple, highly familiar tables and graphs

Certificate I in Initial General Education for Adults (Introductory) Previous unitsRevised units VBQU127 Work with time, money and directions in simple everyday situations VU20769 Work with numbers and money in simple familiar situations VU20770 Work with and interpret directions in simple, familiar situations VBQU128 Work with simple measurement and design VU20771 Work with measurements in simple, familiar situations VU20772 Work with simple design and shape in familiar situations VBQU129 Work with simple numerical and statistical information VU20773 Work with and interpret simple numerical information in familiar texts VU20774Work with and interpret statistical information in simple, familiar texts

Certificate I in General Education for Adults Previous units Revised units VBQU139 Work with time, money and directions in familiar situations VU20791 Work with a range of numbers and money in familiar and routine situations VU20792 Work with and interpret directions in familiar and routine situations VBQU140 Work with measurement and design in familiar situations VU20793 Work with measurement in familiar and routine situations VU20794 Work with design and shape in familiar and routine situations VBQU141 Work with simple numerical and statistical information in familiar situations VU20795 Work with and interpret numerical information in familiar and routine texts VU20796Work with and interpret statistical information in familiar and routine texts
