High-Level Advocacy Forum on Statistics, 30 July 2009, Port of Spain National Strategies for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) A dynamic process: For design and implementation of NSDSs Provides coherent, medium-term framework for better statistics and capacity building Provides basis for scaling-up of resources And for coordination across national statistical systems and between donors Better use of better statistics

High-Level Advocacy Forum on Statistics, 30 July 2009, Port of Spain NSDS as the basis for resource mobilisation Global economic crisis again highlights critical need for good quality statistics NSDS can provide framework for consensus on funding National governments must take lead Supported by cooperating partners PARIS21 can help countries to design NSDSs and to make the case for financing

High-Level Advocacy Forum on Statistics, 30 July 2009, Port of Spain In conclusion We all need to keep in mind: Value of statistics in upstream AND downstream policy processes; and for more effective aid NSDSs can provide a vision and action plan for better statistics and capacity building; and a framework for coordination between producers of statistics and between donors Need for and returns from investing in statistics Need for more support from cooperating partners within the context of NSDSs
