2. eScience, eHumanities, eMedicine The term eScience is not inclusive of the humanities. The workshop attendees on Jan. 28 recommend the use of the term eResearch.

3. eScience Report Outline Factors which limit expansion of eResearch Developing new eResearch is still too complicated or too time consuming for many researchers. Many researchers not aware of the infrastructure available for eResearch. Even researchers who use networks may not keep up with the technology advances. Network technologists do not know what the researcher’s objectives and accomplishments are.

4. eScience Report Outline Vision of APAN’s Role: Promoting and enabling eResearch in the Asia Pacific region. Provide bandwidth and network operating tools - infrastructure for international eResearch activities. Venue for interdisciplinary dialogue between digital libraries, archives, data generators, science agencies and researchers. Venue for dialogue between network builders / operators and researchers using these resources. Development of demonstration projects. Facilitate new eResearch through provision of tools, training, advice and outreach.

5. eScience Report Outline Recommendations Establish eResearch page at apan.net with a broad definition of eScience and eResearch, a list of activities that fall under eResearch, the vision of APAN’s role, and a summary of APAN activities in developing / promoting eResearch. Establish eResearch demonstration project. Assemble open source eResearch toolkit. Communicate with AP organization who would have a use for eResearch technologies. Invite their participation. Communicate with organization who may provide support for AP eResearch development. Develop proposal(s) for regional projects. Continue workshops to enlarge participation in APAN. Thematic workshops could be developed to explore topics of interest across discipline lines (e.g. workshops on imagery or modeling). Could be joint workshops with PRAGMA. Initiate entry level pre-meeting workshops: in the morning - network & eResearch briefings for researchers, in the afternoon - research briefings to network technologists. Focus on local attendees to maximize attendance.

6. Discussion How Best to Implement Recommendations Permanent eScience committee not recommended eScience activities and capabilities are widely distributed in APAN. APAN’s core mission dedicated to serving science, research and education. Distribute responsibility for implementation of eResearch recommendations across APAN elements Establish two eResearch coordinators responsible for web page, workshops and outreach.
