FAMILYSEARCH INDEXING IS WORLDWIDE

INDEXING 1.WHAT IS INDEXING? - A PROCESS WHERE A PERSON CAN TRANSCRIBE DATA FROM A DIGITAL IMAGE WHICH IS THEN POSTED TO A SEACHABLE ONLINE DATABASE. 2. WHO CAN INDEX? – ANYONE OVER 13 WHO HAS ACCESS TO THE INTERNET. 3. THE ONLY REQUIREMENT IS THAT A BATCH MUST BE DONE WITHIN A WEEK. A BATCH CAN USUALLY BE DONE IN 1 HOUR OR LESS.

More Records Are Collected Each Year Camera operators around the world capture about 64 million new images each year.

There are actually two major steps. 1. Digitizing the film images. This is done by FamilySearch using high-speed film scanners. This makes images of each page available. But they cannot be searched by computer, just read manually one frame after another like using a microfilm reader. 2. Indexing means making an index of the main contents of each digital image (page or batch). This is slow and can only be done by humans, and it will take many years to complete the indexing. When indexing of a project is completed, the records can be searched by computer over the internet!

Some Past /Present Projects

Some Current Projects and their Completion Percentages

To start indexing go to https://indexing.familysearch.org Click on Test Drive to see how the program works. Click on Get Started.

Click on Download Now.

Click on Next. Sign in with an LDS Account or ….. …click on Register for a New Account.

Complete the form, then click on Continue. Register for new account

A launch icon is placed on your desktop. When the launch icon is clicked, it opens the Sign In window. Log in with your User name and Password. Logging in to indexing

Click on Download Batch to select a batch to work on. Areas of the screen are: 1.My Work 2.My Messages 3.Personal Download a batch

Select Show all projects Click on the project You want, then click On OK. Download a batch

The batch that was selected is identified at the top. Image area Data entry area. Field Help, Quality Checker, Image navigation & Project Instructions. Batch that has been downloaded

Data can be entered using the Form Entry method or …….. … the Table Entry method. Entering data

Quality Check When all the data is entered the Quality Check window pops up. Click on OK Entries that appear to be wrong are highlighted. Entries can be accepted or changed with the Quality Checker.

ARBITRATION 1. What is arbitration? – Arbitration is the process of comparing the data entered by two different indexers from the same image to ensure that the data was interpreted correctly. 2. Two indexers from anywhere in the world enter data from the same image. This data is then uploaded to the server. 3. The arbitrator is able to see both sets of data side by side on the same screen. The computer checks for any differences in the two records and then the arbitrator corrects any errors. He then sends the corrected data to the engineering depart- ment to be uploaded to the FamilySearch website. 4. Arbitrators are experienced indexers who have completed on-line training.

Arbitration batch Arbitrator views what Indexer A and B have recorded. Arbitrator can accept the correct one or change the incorrect values.

Records are uploaded to FamilySearch A search can be made by entering a name. These results appeared when a search was made for Franklin Roosevelt. We will click on the 1900 census entry…….

These are the results. We can click on View Image to see the actual image. The original census appears. Records that were indexed are shown on FamilySearch

FamilySearch Indexing – Working Together In August 2005, FamilySearch Indexing volunteers began extracting family history information from digital images of historical documents over the Internet to create searchable indexes. Volunteers around the world have indexed over 250 million records.
