19 Results of the Spanish American War: US defeats Spain & becomes a world power Teddy Roosevelt elected VP in 1900 (becomes President in 1901 when McKinley is shot) US gained Spain’s former colonies (Philippines, Guam Puerto Rico and Cuba got its independence) We did get to keep a military base in Cuba, which we have to this day: Guantanamo Bay War only lasted 4 months; known as the “Splendid Little War”
