Tuesday – November 27, 2012 Mr. Lombardi Aim: How did the workers try to solve the problems created by the Industrial Revolution? Do Now: List at least 3 problems created by the Industrial Revolution (look back at your notes from yesterday). Explain how you would attempt to solve each one.

Problems Caused by The Industrial Revolution

Labor Unions – a labor organization usually consisting of workers of the same trade that is formed for the purpose of advancing its members' interests (wages, benefits, working conditions) Collective Bargaining- the process by which wages, hours, rules, and working conditions are negotiated and agreed upon by a union with an employer for all the employees Political Activism – the action to bring about political change. The use of voting to help your cause. Welfare - financial or other assistance to an individual or family from a city, state, or national government Vocabulary

Problems During the Industrial Revolution Solutions to Industrial Revolution Problems A. Child Labor – young children often worked in coalmines & factories because of their size. - this led to serious injuries & death. B. Overcrowded Cities – As factories opened, urban population increased. C. Pollution – factories burned coal which polluted the air & water around the cities. - this led to respiratory diseases (ex: asthma & emphysema). D. Loss of Jobs for Skilled Workers – Craftsmen, (such as Blacksmiths) were replaced by machines & were forced to take lower-paying factory jobs. Problems & Solutions of the Industrial Revolution A. Organized Labor Unions - workers collectively bargained to improve pay & working conditions B. Political Activism - workers voted for candidates who promised to improve conditions. Ex: shorter work day – 8 – 10 hours C. Social Welfare Programs - nations began offering workers assistance such as unemployment benefits & disability payments.

John is one of Mr. Smith’s 2,000 employees at the textile mill. Sick of the dangerous working conditions and low pay, John threatens to quit unless conditions improve and he receives a raise. – Mr. Smith will probably respond to John’s demands by… (EXPLAIN! ) All 2,000 of Mr. Smith’s employees threaten to stop working and shut the textile mill down unless Mr. Smith improves conditions for his workers at the steel mill. – Mr. Smith will probably… (EXPLAIN!)
