2nd Workshop on Severe Weather Technology The Future of the HWT Experimental Warning Program (or “What happens next?”) Travis Smith OU / CIMMS / NSSL

2nd Workshop on Severe Weather Technology Encouraging Developments We survived the first year!  New facilities  New program Prototype experiment (Spring 2007) a resounding success  PAR/CASA/SHAVE data collection / evaluation  Gridded / Probabilistic warning guidance collaboration  Valuable interactions with visiting / local forecasters and WDTB experts

2nd Workshop on Severe Weather Technology Encouraging Developments Many people stepped in with on-the-fly improvements to daily management of projects Many good ideas generated at this workshop Funding for 1 EWP graduate student from NSSL Personnel resources contributed by several organizations

2nd Workshop on Severe Weather Technology Year 1 collaboration NSSL / CIMMS researchers WFO forecasters from Central Region and Southern Region WFO OUN Warning Decision Training Branch CASA (UMass, OU, others) MDL

2nd Workshop on Severe Weather Technology Collaboration resources WxGIS  http://csa.ou.edu  “WxGIS aims to establish a world leadership in weather GIS and achieve a seamless integration of GIScience and weather in research, education, and operations.” WAS*IS – Weather and Society * Integrated Studies  http://www.sip.ucar.edu/wasis/

2nd Workshop on Severe Weather Technology Some challenges Project management “out of hide” by NSSL/CIMMS and WFO personnel who have other primary duties Still no steady stream of support from PPBES until at least FY10 (?) No easy way to maintain the momentum established in 2007 without a steady funding source.

2nd Workshop on Severe Weather Technology Some things that might happen… Multiple visitors each year from all NWS regions, possibly funded by:  HWT grants (in the future)  Individual projects may sponsor some travel  NWS Regions (as this year) HWT grants for specific projects  This is a line in the FY10 PPBES

2nd Workshop on Severe Weather Technology Some things that might happen… EWP could become a year-round activity  Severe weather threats occur year-round  Will require a dedicated infrastructure Full-time coordinator IT support Software/Experiment training for visitors Remote collaboration  “Virtual EWP”

2nd Workshop on Severe Weather Technology HWT facility upgrades? It can be a noisy place!  EFP and EWP share a space  Multiple different EWP projects running simultaneously Need for EWP situational awareness displays Funding for upgrade to video system approved Room configuration? Simulated WFO space? (full AWIPS feed?)

2nd Workshop on Severe Weather Technology Submitting a project for consideration Scientific goals Funding source  Presently, projects must bring their own funding Dates  Setup / testing period  Project period (including times of day) Physical space requirements Equipment & IT resources  to be provided by the project, in most cases

2nd Workshop on Severe Weather Technology Submitting a project for consideration Reviewed by the HWT scientific advisory board  Scientists from NSSL, SPC, WFO OUN Approved by the HWT directors  Directors of NSSL, SPC, WFO OUN
