A famous river in Budapest is called the Danube River. Hungary is located in Central Europe in the Northern Hemisphere. It is roughly the size of the state of Indiana. It is a land locked country and has no direct access to a sea or ocean. The capital of Hungary is Budapest. This city is divided into two equal sides by the Danube River: Buda and Pest.

The official language in Hungary is Hungarian. The population of Hungary is 10.1 million It is a Christian country whose main religion is Roman Catholic (> 90%). The average life expectancy in Hungary is 73 years old: 69 for males and 77 for females The literacy rate in Hungary is 99.4% and ranked 11 th in the world.

The system of government is parliamentary democracy. Hungary has two leaders similar to Great Britain. A Prime Minister who is the official head of state. His name is Gyorgy Bajnai. He is a member of the social democratic party. The other leader is the President of Hungary which is a legislative position. His name is Laszlo Solyom. He is a member of the Hungarian Democratic party.

Hungary used to be a country where people worked in agriculture and small blue collar manufacturing jobs. Since 1990 there has been an increase in public and private white collar jobs including agriculture, manufacturing, and retail businesses. The money that people use in Hungary is called a Hungarian Forint. One U.S. dollar equals 185 Forints.

The Hungarian GDP is about $14,000 This ranks Hungary within the top 50 economies in the world.

Hungary received 0 medals in the 2010 Winter Olympics. In the history of the Winter Olympics, Hungary has received 6 medals: 2 Silver and 4 Bronze. All medals were won in Figure Skating. The most recent was a Silver medal in 1980 in Ice Dancing. Their best performance this year was 5 th in Women’s team Short Track Speed Skating.
